The end of fossil fuels has been predicted for the near future and this is constantly driving up energy prices. Energy-intensive sectors, such as horticultural production under glass, face the challenge of developing and implementing technologies which will reduce costs while increasing yields.

The Low Energy Greenhouse joint research project „Zukunftsinitiative Niedrigenergiegewächshaus” (ZINEG) is currently conducting a study on fossil-based energy consumption in heated greenhouses. CO2 emissions can be reduced by using innovative roof cladding, multi-layered thermal screens and future-oriented climate control strategies, all of which drastically reduce energy consumption.

Having an adequate water supply is also crucial in terms of increasing the yield and quality of plant production. Water supplies are limited in many parts of the world – in part due to climate change – therefore this resource must be managed in a responsible manner. In recent years there has been a continuing trend towards greater optimization of water use in the horticultural sector. Appropriate
cultivation and irrigation methods serve to decrease the use of water, thus minimising adverse effects on the environment.

Careful planning and ecologically-sound technical expertise ensure that sheltered cultivation areas provide ideal growing conditions and that the use of energy, water and nutrients is kept to a minimum. Providing professional, tailor-made greenhouse planning and building solutions has been a core competence of GEFOMA GmbH for many years.

As the saying goes, “Why seek far afield, when goodness is on your doorstep?” It will come as no surprise, then, that GEFOMA GmbH Großbeeren headquarters are surrounded by greenhouse facilities for research and teaching. We invite all of our business partners to stop by and visit us at GEFOMA to see how we apply our know-how: We offer tours of our facilities, providing visitors with an in-depth look at our tried-and-tested technologies. Some might call such an approach innovative, but we simply call it customer-friendly. And our customers certainly seem to appreciate the practical benefits it offers them.

GEFOMA GmbH was established as an engineering office for horticulture in 1990. The original aim of the founders was – and remains today – to turn applied horticultural research into ready-for-use solutions.
GEFOMA developed into a company that served the needs of the market, and throughout the years one specific service focus began to emerge: the planning of greenhouses, technical facilities and sophisticated horticulture businesses.
Faced with increasingly complex tasks, our planning expertise continued to grow in project management and the documentation of large-scale building projects. At the same time, this resulted in more interdisciplinary cooperation with architects and other specialist planners.
Today, GEFOMA GmbH Großbeeren is renowned as an independent engineering and planning service provider for the international greenhouse construction market.

GEFOMA is a future-oriented company in the horticulture industry with a strong focus on human health and well-being. We also offer our knowledge and expertise to support voluntary projects in related areas.
